about

Initially I thought Anyone's Girl was too pop sounding for an album which is mainly a dreamy alternative take on folk and country music. I showed the song to Nick Bullock when he was nudging me for more, as he did so gently and often in the pre-production process. It was really great writing in that way - I enjoy being challenged to accept and work with all the songs that come through, rather than discarding them prematurely as has happened in the past. Allowing new ears to access what I’ve been playing around with can take songs to a new place.

And that’s what happened with this track. Nick loved it and brought out the essence of it with the wonderful Clark Singleton on bass, Hannah Holbrook on keys and Aaron Shafer-Haiss on drums. Now it has ended up as the first single!

lyrics

Anyone’s Girl

Verse 1
Did you ever want to take back any of your hard beliefs about me?
Did you ever want to address some of the thoughts that you just think?

Pre Chorus 1
I believed it all,
And you’d be saying what I wanted to hear, ooh ooh.

Chorus 1
Forgive the past for what it isn’t,
The future hasn’t yet been written,
Hey I could be anyone’s girl.

Verse 2
Did you ever press stop just to hear our song keep playing on?
Did you ever look back, think twice, fall head over heels in love?

Pre Chorus 2
I believed it all,
And you’d be saying what you thought I wanted to hear, but soon I didn’t.

Chorus 2
Forgive the past for what it isn’t,
The future hasn’t yet been written,
Hey I could be anyone’s girl.

Bridge
Oh the normal course of love,
Is just so tame and predictable,
And it doesn’t seem much fun,
Compared to what we had, all the fighting and the drama,
The tragic importance of us.

Verse 3
Did you ever want to go back change what you couldn’t help but say?
Or did you just forge ahead assuming we would be okay?

Pre Chorus 3
I believed it all,
You’d be lying but I wanted to hear it, I really did.

Chorus 3
Forgive the past for what it isn’t,
The future hasn’t yet been written,
Hey hey hey, hey hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey hey hey

Outro
Forgive the past for what it isn’t,
No need to accept the path we’re given
Hey hey hey, hey hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey hey hey
Hey I could be anyone’s girl.
